HOLY WEEK in SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE

The traditional events begin at midnight with the brought of the Señor de la Columna from the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, on the fifth Sunday of Lent. The image makes a stop at dawn of Monday at La Santa Cruz del Perdón, arriving at the Church of San Juan de Dios to celebrate a mass at eight o’clock in the morning of that same day. The image remains in this church until Wednesday, day in which returns to the Sanctuary of Atotonilco at night. This tradition dates from 1812 and it has been celebrated every year since. It began as the result of an epidemic that whipped the Villa that year; thus villagers decided to take the image out so that it would bless and release the population of then of that tragedy.

Friday of Dolores:
In the morning people visit some of the churches which mount an altar. One can appreciate this in places like La Santa Escuela de Cristo (the holy school of Christ), La Parroquia (the Parish), San Francisco, San Juan de Dios, the Oratory of San Felipe Neri, etc. In the evening the houses of the faithful devotees remain open, in some cases only the windows, so that are visited by public in general to appreciate the altars dedicated to the Santísima Virgen (Holy Virgin). The hosts offer to the visitor fresh water, ice cream, candies and the traditional conserve of chilacayote, custom that dates from 1725.

Saturday: Happens at the same time as the celebration of the Santo Apóstol José (Holy Apostle Joseph), where a procession takes place with the image of Señor San José being carried around the Temple and the vestibule of the Oratory of San Felipe Neri. In San José del Obraje takes place a special event with a procession and popular verbena.

Sunday of Ramos (Palms): The mass of the blessing of palms is celebrated in the morning in all churches of the municipality. The procession of the Palms takes place in the vestibule of the Oratory approximately at 19:00 hours, with songs of children dressed as Apostles interpreting "GLORIA LAUDS". These are praise songs to Christ remembering his entrance to Jerusalem.

Monday: In the morning a mass is celebrated in the Temple of the Oratory, and at night a representation with the image of the Apprehension of Christ is carried out in a procession headed to the greater altar of the church, in which it is placed in a simulated jail. In this representation Judas and the Roman soldiers are personified with suits of the time.

Holy Tuesday: In the morning a mass to the Señor del APOSENTILLO (the one that this in jail) takes place, with traditional songs of the passion interpreted by children. In the evening at seven o’clock there is a rosary with songs from the church’s choir, with approximately 30 children dressed in white and purple suits offering incense, flowers and perfumes. In the evening a procession takes place starting at the vestibule of the Church of San Juan de Dios with the image of El Señor de la Columna, headed towards the town’s main square.

Holy Wednesday: In the morning a mass is offered to El Señor del Golpe represented with a cross. In the afternoon at five o’clock the image comes out of the garden’s esplanade to pray the Vía Crucis passing over each one of the quarry vaulted niches placed outside the walls of peoples houses, located in the streets of Correo, Corregidora, Juárez, Mesones and Núñez, up to the Calvario Church in the Street of San Francisco precisely at the turn with the Real Salida a Querétaro. The vaulted niches, although should de fourteen, are incomplete since some of them were took out when the Leyes de Reforma (Laws of the Reformation) were published.

Holy Thursday: From five o’clock in the afternoon, masses of Eucharistic celebration are officiated in order to, later, make the visit of the seven houses to the Santísimo, that it is on a monument of each church for adoration. This event consists in visiting the seven different churches. Afterwards the Santísimo is moved to its monument in the Temple of Santa Ana. This same day at six o’clock in the afternoon takes place the representation of Jesus washing the feet of his Apostles in all churches. There’s also an afternoon mass for El Señor de la Columna in the Temple of San Juan de Dios.

Holy Friday: In the morning the ceremony of the sentencing of Christ in the vestibule of the Parish and Church of La Santa Escuela is carried out, later is took in procession towards the esplanade of the garden for its encounter with the Virgin Mary, Maria Magdalena, Maria Cleofás, the Verónica and San Juan Evangelista. All the previous representative images belong to the Santa Escuela. This event happens at twelve o’clock. In this procession Romans and penitents are personified carrying skulls in their hands and dressed in a purple ixtle sayal (sackcloth), following the steps of the priest that carries the cross, like Father Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro did it since 1765. From twelve three o’clock in the afternoon the AGONIAS (Christ’s moments of suffering in the cross) at the temple of the Oratory are carried out and from five o’clock in the afternoon the procession of the Holly Burial, is headed by the Roman military, with the image of Jesus carried by devotees that dresses black suites; on the other hand the ladies carry the image of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, all of them dressed in rigorous mourning, followed by young ladies who carry the rest of the images, as well as the angels with the symbols of the passion; also accompanied by children and adults who sing CHRISTUS FACTUS played by the Valley Orchestra of Santiago. This procession has been represented for more over than 291 years, and happens in the streets of Pepe Llanos, Mesones, Juárez, San Francisco, the Municipal Presidency and Hidalgo, to return to the temple of the Oratory. At seven o’clock the "Agonies or darkness" ceremony happens at the temple of San Francisco. At two in the afternoon El Señor del Monumento is retrieved to the Temple of Santa Ana.

Saturday of Glory: At seven o’clock in the afternoon the condolence to Nuestra Señora de la Soledad in the Oratory is carried out, with allusive songs to the solitude. At nine o’clock at night takes place the Vigilia Pascual and the Blessing of the New Fire in San Juan de Dios, in the Temple of San Antonio and other temples; from ten to eleven at night the mass of glory in all the churches of San Miguel de Allende is celebrated.

Sunday of Resurrection: Mass in the morning. The traditional burning of the Judas takes place at twelve o’clock.

Since the year of 1884 the traditional verbenas in the streets of Recreo and Subida del Chorro took place, regretfully this tradition began to fade away in 1895. In these verbenas one could enjoy bands playing live, fireworks, fights of roosters, and other entertaining activities.
